JONES, Douglas John
August 4, 1931 – October 15, 2024
Doug Jones, a long-time resident of Anten Mills, passed away Tuesday, October 15 at Mill Creek Long Term Care Centre in his 94th year.
Predeceased by his wife of 63 years Pauline (Johnston), parents Leonard Jones and Muriel Braithwaite, brothers Joe Jones (Marg) and David Jones (Noreen).
Beloved father of Doug Jones (Sue) of Barrie and Glenn Jones (Barb) of Holland Landing. Grandfather of Bobby Jones (Steph) of Barrie and Alana Jones (Paul) and Lauren Jones of Hamilton. Great Papa to Jackson and gray Jones.
Doug was born in Toronto in 1931, in the height of the Great Depression but the family moved back to their roots when he was a young boy. They lived on Flos Concession 2 (now Rainbow Valley Road) where he contributed on the family farm during the struggles of the Second World War and the years after.
He met and married Pauline Johnston of Phelpston in 1957.
After his father became ill, and subsequently died, he and Pauline took over the family farm. While farming Doug worked at Mansfield Rubber/M.D.G./General Tire and was one of the longest tenured employees, staying over 30 years.
In 1967 they sold the farm and built a house in the village of Anten Mills. He remained in that house until just a few years ago.
After retiring from General Tire, he took a position with Brinks as a driver/guard and developed many friends and enjoyed the job immensely.
In retirement he enjoyed going to his 50 acres and cutting trees, splitting wood and transporting it back to the house. He often said if he paid himself $2.00 per hour for his work it wouldn’t be worth it, but it keeps me busy.
Doug and Pauline enjoyed going to Casino Rama and Georgian Downs with friends and family and the subsequent lunch out.
Although Pauline hated flying, they went on a few trips with Glenn and Barb, most notably to Arizona and California.
Life was never the same after Pauline’s passing in August 2020. In later years he was often heard to say, “I’ve lived too long!”
A special thank you to the staff at Mill Creek for their compassion and care over the last 3 ½ years.
A visitation for Doug will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at Legacy Funeral Home, 55 Cedar Pointe Drive, Barrie (parking and main entrance on Hwy 400 side of the building) from 10am – 11:15am, followed by the funeral service at 11:30am and then a time of reception for family and friends. An interment will be held at Minesing Union Cemetery at 2:15pm.
Memorial donations to the Elmvale Food Bank, Elmvale Legion, or Mill Creek Care Centre would be appreciated by the family.
