The Scoop

By Linda Belcourt

This community is not being affected by the latest Canada Post rotating strike — for now!
The Ontario Community Newspaper Association, of which I am a member, has provided a list of all post offices and facilities that are currently not handling Neighbourhood Mail. Neighbourhood Mail is what this paper is delivered by; it is essentially non-addressed mail sent by picking postal codes. Flyers also use Neighbourhood Mail, and newspapser are being called flyers by CUPW.  People can opt of of flyers but not newspapers.     In general, newspapers in Northern and Eastern Ontario are unaffected. However, those in the GTA, Niagara, and Southwestern Ontario are likely to have their Neighbourhood Mail delivery curtailed.
Latest round of rotating strikes (from the Canada Post website, Nov. 11, 2025):

  •  November 4, 2025: Cobourg (Ont.) and London (Ont.)
  • November 3, 2025: CUPW in Ontario (excluding Metro-Toronto and central regions) will not be processing or delivering Neighbourhood Mail.
  • October 20, 2025: CUPW in Quebec (excluding the Metro-Montréal region) will not be processing or delivering Neighbourhood Mail.

This affects around 425 postal offices.
Can you imagine the day I meet the transport truck at the Barrie Post Office, carrying 23,000 copies of the paper, only to have nowhere to unload them? I can take 5,000 copies in my truck for news stands, but the rest? I sit on pins and needles on delivery day waiting to see whether the doors are open or not.
If this upsets you, dear reader, please contact your MP and let them know how this affects you and your access to local news.
