Kings Open Season with a Win and a Loss

Submitted by Jamie Robillard

Sep. 20, 2024 – The Penetang Kings opened the 2024-25 Provincial Junior Hockey League season by splitting their first two home games dropping an 8-6 decision to the Orillia Terriers on Friday September 13 and bouncing back to get past the Midland Flyers by a score of 4-2 on Saturday September 14.

Playing before a large crowd of supporters at the Penetanguishene Memorial Community Centre on Friday evening the Kings came out flat and found themselves down by a score of 5-1 just 2:14 into the second period.  A goaltending change at with Kevin Pearson entering the nets replacing starter Michael Purkhart ignited the offence and the Kings came back to tie the score at five all before the second period ended.  The King’s scoring was led by Cole Rumbolt with two markers and signals from Wyndam Brownlee, Thomas Ryder and Ty Hutton.

In the third period Orillia scored on a penalty shot before adding power play and empty net goals to seal the 8-6 win.  Tanner Thayer netted the only third period goal for the Kings. Pearson played a strong game in relief turning aside 26 of the 28 shots he faced in the Penetang goal.  Ty Hutton was named the Kings first star with one goal and two assists.

In Saturday’s game against the Flyers, Jesse Bain scored twice including an empty net marker while Rumbolt and Brownlee added one goal each for the Kings in the win.  Once again Kevin Pearson stood tall between the pipes stopping 26 shots for the Kings.  In doing so Pearson was named the first star of the game.

Penetang will be on the road for three games, first on September 27 in Huntsville then September 29 in Innisfil followed by an October 3 game in Stayner.  The Kings return home on Friday October 4th when they host the expansion Muskoka Bears at 8:00 pm at the PMCC.

The Carruthers Division has seen some changes since the end of last season with both the Schomberg Cougars and the Caledon Golden Hawks moving the PJHL’s East Orr Division and Muskoka playing out of the new recreation complex in Bracebridge joining the division.

The Kings with 14 new players in the lineup look to play an exciting and competitive brand of hockey under returning head coach Scott Simon and assistant coaches Braedan Dorion and Jared Aube and look forward to seeing our fans throughout the season.

THE BAYCATS ARE 2024 DOMINICO CUP CHAMPIONS

September 15, 2024 by Sam Aucoin

The Barrie Baycats have won the 2024 Jack and Lynne Dominico Cup after a 6-2 win against the Guelph Royals in Game Four. They finished the postseason 10-0 and only trailed for two half-innings.

They got the job done behind Playoff MVP Frank Garcés, who pitched eight brilliant innings, surrendering just one run (unearned). After giving up the momentum-shifting home run to Carlos Martinez a season ago, Brad Grieveson got the chance to close it out and did so, prompting a large celebration among players, coaches, volunteers, and all the Baycats fans who came out to Guelph.

Garcés earned the win, his third of the postseason, and his fourth playoff start in which he gave up two runs or less in the 2024 playoffs.

For the Baycats on offence, it was Ryan Rijo who had four hits and two runs batted in, and Brandon Hernandez who had three hits, including a two-run double to kickstart the offence. Nolan Machibroda and Canice Ejoh both had a pair of base hits.

Ejoh caught the final out of the ball game.

Many Baycats fans made the trip to Guelph, resulting in plenty of “Let’s Go Baycats” chants. As the game went on, the Baycats fans went back and forth with chants against the Royals fans, creating a lively atmosphere for those in attendance at Hastings Stadium.

Baycats win 6-2
